Bihar Hosts 2025 Khelo India Youth Games: A Historic Leap in Indian Sports

Introduction

In a monumental stride for Indian sports, Bihar hosted the 7th edition of the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) from May 4 to May 15, 2025. This marked the first time the state welcomed this prestigious multi-sport event, reflecting its growing commitment to nurturing athletic talent and enhancing sports infrastructure.

Host Cities: Patna, Rajgir, Gaya, Bhagalpur, and Begusarai

Participants: Over 10,000 athletes from 36 states and union territories

Sports Disciplines: 28, including traditional sports like Thang-Ta, Kalaripayattu, and Mallakhamb

Mascot: Gajasimha—symbolizing strength and courage, inspired by Bihar's rich cultural heritage 


The games were inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar present at the opening ceremony held at Patna's Patliputra Sports Complex.

As the host state, Bihar showcased an impressive performance: 

Total Medals: 36 (7 Gold, 11 Silver, 18 Bronze)

Overall Rank: 15th, a significant leap from previous editions

Notable Achievements:

Gold in athletics by Khushi Yadav (2000m steeplechase) and Alka Singh (shot put)

Two golds in Thang-Ta by Priya Prerna and Mahika Kumari

Strong performances in rugby and sepak takraw 



This marked a 620% improvement from Bihar's previous performances, highlighting the state's growing prowess in the national sports arena.

Maharashtra clinched its third consecutive KIYG title with a record 158 medals (58 Gold).

Haryana secured second place with 117 medals, excelling in fencing and athletics.

Rajasthan achieved its best-ever finish, ranking third with 60 medals.  


Additionally, the games witnessed the setting of 26 new records, including eight by female athletes, and five national youth records in weightlifting, underscoring the event's role in unearthing new talent.
