In a major boost to weather monitoring and disaster preparedness, Marathwada is all set to get its first Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) system. The radar will be installed at Mhaismal in Khultabad taluka, located in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra. This project is being spearheaded by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and is backed by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

Marathwada has long been vulnerable to erratic weather patterns, particularly unseasonal rain, thunderstorms, and droughts. Yet, until now, it lacked a local radar system to provide accurate and timely weather predictions.

A C-Band Doppler Radar is a powerful tool that uses microwave frequencies to track precipitation, wind patterns, and storm movement. It’s particularly effective in medium-range weather forecasting—ideal for regions like Marathwada that face both droughts and flash floods.
Although some experts suggested an X-Band radar for higher resolution, the C-Band was chosen for its broader coverage and cost-effectiveness.

Union Minister of State for Earth Sciences Dr. Jitendra Singh confirmed the development in a statement to BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ajeet Gopchade, who actively advocated for the project.
